This is a question we receive regularly, especially from beginner to intermediate wig clients. It's important to have a good understanding of how long you should wear your wig and the care involved in prolonging that duration when wanted. The answer to the question comes with a lot of varieties but we'll look at the best tips to care for your wig while you wear it!
The long answer to this question is that it really varies based on the type of wig you install, the way the wig was installed, how fast your natural hair grows, how closely you follow natural hair wig care tips as well as a few others.
But the quick answer is: it depends on the chemical composition of the adhesive you use. If you choose to install your unit with adhesive, it's imperative to use the right adhesive for your desires! Some adhesives are short-term, while others can keep a wig glued for several weeks (4-6 months). You should choose the right glue, or it will damage your edges. Before we continue, it's important to remember that your natural hair needs attention; wash and moisturize them regularly. Wigs are a good way to enhance your beauty, but they cannot replace the original healthy hairs. Tips to Care for Your Wig
1. Switch it up! Wearing the same wig everyday will not further the lifespan of the unit. Try rotating between a few wigs every so often to keep the lifespan of all your units.
2. Give your wig some love! It's important to comb through your wig, and wash it with shampoo and conditioner (preferably sulfate free) between wears.
3. Storing your wig! It's best to store your wig on a wig head between wears, ideally away from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
Tips for Washing Your Wigs
1. Rinse with cool to luke warm water. (Water should be at room temperature or slightly warmer.)
2. Apply a very small drop of high quality mild shampoo to the wet hair (avoid the scalp area). Do NOT rub the hair or scalp as you would with your own.
3. Comb the shampoo through the hair from top to bottom using gentle downward strokes one section at a time. Do not scrub the hair.
4. Gently apply some of the soapy water to the inside of the cap. Do not scrub the cap.
5. Rinse again with cool to luke warm water from the top down and from the inside of the cap to remove excess shampoo.
6. Gently blot hair with a towel. Do not rub the hair with the towel.
7. You may now apply some conditioner to the damp hair. Avoid the scalp area as the conditioner can loosen the knots.
8. Rinse with cool to luke warm water from top down.
Prevent entanglement of your wig
▪ Occasionally, the wig may be entangled or nape (neck), because the back and shoulder region of the friction junction upward. The thinner the hair the more likely is that it will gather - this is completely normal.
▪ The best way to prevent tangles is to brush a wig and a small drop of oil each time at the end of each day. It really is very important to maintain a healthy wig and prevent dry hair and struggle, because it does not receive the natural oils from the head.
